Dusting off my theatrical cred

In about me, theatre on July 20, 2012 at 11:21 am

Now that I have all this time on my hands, I’m trying to get back into theatre.

I’ve just worked out that I did 15 shows — in one capacity or another — in just over 10 years with the Ignatians Musical Society in Brisbane. Not to mention countless choral performances, charity concerts, weddings and funerals.

1982The Gondoliers (crew member)
1983No No Nanette (crew member); The Zoo/Trial By Jury (stage manager); Guys and Dolls (crew member)
1984Utopia Ltd (cast member); How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (cast member — featured dancer!!!)
1985The Mikado (lighting operator); The King and I (stage manager)
1986Patience (stage manager)
1987Man of La Mancha (stage manager in the Princess Theatre); Iolanthe (stage manager)
1990Pirates of Penzance (cast member and stage manager)
1992Music Man (president); Ruddigore (president)
1993Showboat (president)

Ah, youth.

Can’t wait to get back into it, somehow, somewhere.

A tiny little squee

In theatre on June 17, 2012 at 1:40 pm

In 18 sleeps, a friend and I will be sitting in the fifth row on opening night of the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Queen Lear, starring Robyn Nevin.

I KNOW!

For a start, Lear is just about my favourite Shakespeare … the Scottish play notwithstanding. Not just from the point of view of the drama, but also from a staging perspective. Eyeballs!! Come on, it doesn’t get any better than that.

And Nevin. NEVIN!

I’ve been lucky enough to see Maggie Smith (twice), Patrick Stewart, Felicity Kendall, Penelope Keith, and Kiri Te Kanawa on stage. All heroes of mine.

Now I get to see Robyn Nevin. Stoked. Big-time stoked.
